The smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes, including synthesis of lipids, metabolism of carbohydrates and calcium concentration, drug detoxification, and attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins. It is connected to the nuclear envelope. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is found in a variety of cell types (both animal and plant) and it serves different functions in each. The Smooth ER also contains the enzyme Glucose-6-phosphatase which converts glucose-6-phosphate to glucose, a step in gluconeogenesis. Smooth ER consists of tubules and vesicles that branch forming a network. In some cells there are dilated areas like the sacs of rough endoplasmic reticulum. The network of smooth endoplasmic reticulum allows increased surface area for the action or storage of key enzymes and the products of these enzymes. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is known for its storage of calcium irons in muscle cells.
The job of the smooth ER is to produce functions.
Smooth ER?
Lipid synthesis.
Is the distal extension of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and produces lipids, steroid compounds and detoxifies materials.
synthesises lipids; metabolises carbohydrates.
1. It synthesizes lipids (ex. phospholipids and steroids). For example, the ER in the ovaries and testes synthesize steroid hormones.
2. Enzymes in the smooth ER help regulate the amount of sugar released from liver cells into the blood stream.
3. Detoxifies alcohol and poison
4. storage of calcium ions
ex. Necessary for contraction of in muscle. When a nerve signal stimulates a muscle cell, calcium ions leak from the smooth ER into the cytoplasmic fluid, where they trigger the contraction of the cell.
5. In junction with the Golgi complex, it manufactures lysosomes (an organelle made of hydrolitic enzymes enclosed in a membranous sac which digests food) and peroxisomes (organelle which detoxifies poisons and creates hydrogen peroxide)
it puts water and nutrients in the cell
-It makes proteins and lipids that will be exported by the cell
-It controls the Calcium level in the muscles
-It detoxifies poisons, alcohol, and drugs
It is the smooth ER. They also produce lysosmes and peroxisomes
Its called smooth Endoplasmic reticulum a.k.a Smooth ER
The endoplasmic reticulum is a packaging system. There is a rough and a smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is important in the synthesis and packaging of proteins. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is important in the creation and storage of steroids.
The Endoplasmic Reticulum is involved in these processes. The rough ER is involved in protein synthesis. The smooth ER is involved in lipid synthesis.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum makes lipids and breaks down toxic material. Rough endoplasmic reticulum makes protein.
A smooth endoplasmic reticulum can be used for transportation. I think there are more functions but I'm not sure what they are. Also, a rough endoplasmic reticulum is just like smooth endoplasmic reticulum except with ribosomes attached.
It is the smooth ER. They also produce lysosmes and peroxisomes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
To view images of smooth endoplasmic reticulum one could look for biology books. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions with the production in several metabolic processes, it is "smooth" because it is not studded with ribosomes.
In the sarcoplasmic reticulum (smooth er).
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
No because if they been connected then it be smooth endoplasmic reticulum or the rough endoplasmic reticulum and it will be one of the both :p
Its called smooth Endoplasmic reticulum a.k.a Smooth ER
Two types of Endoplasmic Reticuli exists, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the synthesis of proteins -{from through}- VIA the ribosomes embedded within its structure. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the synthesis of lipids and steroids.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum is studded with protein-producing ribosomes giving it a "rough" appearance, hence its name. It works in concert with the Golgi complex to target new proteins to their proper destinations. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with both the nuclear envelope and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes; it contains enzymes, and it stores calcium ions in muscle cells. Lipid synthesis takes place in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
