To affect the environment fertilizer has to be applied at a rate beyond the needs of the crop or plants. The excess washes off into urface waters or groundwater. fertillers are awsome! the are great for the environment .

Once in surface water the fertizer encourages plant growth (e.g. algae) which continue to grow until the extra food is gone. The algae then die and rot causing algal blooms which reduce oxygen in the water for fish.

In ground water the nitrates in the fertizer make the water unsafe for human or animal consumption.

If fertilizers are used correctly, there should be no side effects. However, if ingested accidentally, it counts as poison because of its potassium nitrate makeup and may cause nausea, vomiting, and other such related symptoms. If the dose is severe enough, it may cause blackouts and possible coma and death. It is also known to affect the surrounding wildlife if used incorrectly, e.g. applying far too much fertilizer.

Excessive use of fertilizers by farmers and gardeners can result to the leakage of nitrogen and phosphates in soil, or water. When these chemicals are leaked into groundwater, they travel to larger bodies of water, such as, lakes or rivers. This can lead to a process known as Eutrophication where living beings can no longer live in a water body and can also cause stomach ulcers and blue baby syndromes in humans who intake these infected waters. Also, it is extremely expensive to clean these lakes and rivers up, because there will be a need for continuous checkups and cleans ups on the same water body to prevent it from re-polluting and species of organisms living there will have to be revived making it a long and difficult process.

Fertilizers which are chemically manufactured can only have harmful side effects with overuse.Overuse of such fertilizers can reverse the fertility of the soil, and reduce its productivity. It can also detoriate the water table below the soil and absorption of such water by crops can lead to its being practically inedible since the chances of it developing a low pH value via. acidic characteristic is very high.

However, no such effect will take place with manure and other natural fertilizer.

  • Fertilizers contribute to mineralize the top soil which in turn contributes to soil erosion because rain is less absorbed by the soil, and will just run off.
  • The run-offs end up in the underground water or in the rivers and eventually into the ocean, together with the top soil.
  • Nitrates in the underground water or rivers make the water toxic and non drinkable for human and animal life, requiring extensive purification.
  • Phosphates that end up in lakes cause eutrophication, which is the filling up of lakes, and can cause harmful algal blooms in oceans which release toxins or have killed humans and animals from the decomposing gases after they end up on beaches. They are called red tides when they occur at large, or green tides for algae that beach on land.

Effects of fertilizers on water quality?

Properly fertilized land causes no water issues at all and provides several times more food then if fertilizers were not used. Without fertilizers the planet could not sustain anywhere near the volume of humans we currently have. Over fertilization with some forms of fertilizers can cause water contamination. Some fertilizers are natural and run off from them is not an issue.

What are the disadvantages of using natural fertilizers?

Availability, costs and results may be disadvantages of using natural fertilizers. Artificial, chemical, inorganic, synthetic fertilizers are available through a widespread, established network of suppliers. Also, prices tend to be higher, and amounts tend to be smaller, in terms of natural fertilizers. Additionally, natural fertilizers tend to produce less dramatic results over a longer period of time.

Are the use of pesticides and fertilizers damaging?

The use of fertilizers and pesticides can be harmful to the environment, and to the farmer or gardener using them. Usually, there are not enough toxins in the substance used to harm the consumer of a crop. When it rains, fertilizers will be carries through streams and eventually into rivers. Fertilizers can causse an over-growth of alage and cause eutrophication. Because Manure provide Humus to the soil while fertilizers do not provide any humus. Fertilizers provide a specific nutrient to the soil while manure is reactively liss rich in plant nutrient.
