they eat, grow and didvide. Bacteria will divide every 20 minutes, in a perfect growing environment. This kind of exponential growth has the potential to be very deadly, very quickly, as bacteria kill their host cell within the human body. Luckily, bacteria hit their carrying capacity in the human body at a relatively low manageable level for the immune system to fight off due to competition resulting from such limiting factors as space and food

Bacteria just like other organisms need some nutrient elements like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen , hydrogen, potassium etc. In natural environment they take it from the natural sources but in laboratory condition it is made available to bacteria by growing them in a medium known as cultural medium which contain all these necessary compounds

A growth medium or culture medium is a liquid or gel designed to support the growth of microorganisms or cells, or small plants like the moss Physcomitrella patens. There are different types of media for growing different types of cells.

There are two major types of growth media: those used for cell culture, which use specific cell types derived from plants or animals, and microbiological culture, which are used for growing microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast. The most common growth media for microorganisms are nutrient broths and agar plates; specialized media are sometimes required for microorganism and cell culture growth. Some organisms, termed fastidious organisms, require specialized environments due to complex nutritional requirements. Viruses, for example, are obligate intracellular parasites and require a growth medium containing living cells

The nutrient media is as:

Nutrient media

  • a source of amino acids and nitrogen (e.g., beef, yeast extract)

This is an undefined medium because the amino acid source contains a variety of compounds with the exact composition being unknown. Nutrient media contain all the elements that most bacteria need for growth and are non-selective, so they are used for the general cultivation and maintenance of bacteria kept in laboratory culture collections.

An undefined medium (also known as a basal or complex medium) is a medium that contains:

  • a carbon source such as glucose for bacterial growth
  • water
  • various salts needed for bacterial growth

Defined media (also known as chemically defined media)

  • all the chemicals used are known
  • does not contain any yeast, animal or plant tissue.

Differential medium

  • some sort of indicator, typically a dye, is added, that allows for the differentiation of particular chemical reactions occurring during growth.

This varies depending on the type of bacteria. For example, warmblooded animal pathogenic bacteria require a temperature of around 98oF, a correct entry site, and for the host to be susceptible to that type of bacteria. Thermo-phillic bacteria require extremely hot temperature to grow. Viruses require a healthy host cell in order to get its DNA/RNA replicated. Parasites require the host body to be healthy enough to sustain itself and the parasite.

The bacterial growth curve is usually exponential in shape just like most of the living organism.

What is the difference between bacterial and anti bacterial hand wash?

Bacterial hand wash favors the growth of bacteria on the surface of the skin ( hands). On the other hand ( no pun intended) ANTI bacterial hand wash does not favor bacterial growth and in fact contains agents to prevent any bacterial growth on the hands.
