Gametes are the "sex cells" (haploid cells). The male gametes are sperm; the female gametes are the ova, or eggs.

Normally the female gamete (ovum, or egg) is bigger than the sperm or male gamete. The fertilization of the egg by the sperm results in a complete set of chromosomes for the resultant combination (zygote) to divide and form an offspring of the original organism.
