Semmelweis noted that women who were delivered my midwives were much less likely to die of "child-bed" fever. Doctors who delivered babies also did autopsies and didn't wash or used antiseptic methods. His finding were dismissed by many and because of this many women died. All this occurred long before before the Germ Theory of Disease was first postulated.

What is ignaz semmelweis contribution in microbiology?

Ignaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician who is known for promoting the importance of handwashing in medical settings to prevent the spread of infections, particularly childbed fever. His work helped pave the way for the germ theory of disease and was instrumental in improving hygiene practices in healthcare.

How did semmelweis make the discovery?

Ignaz Semmelweis made the discovery of the importance of handwashing in preventing infections by observing that the mortality rate in the maternity ward where doctors washed their hands with chlorine solution was significantly lower than in the ward where they did not. This led him to conclude that proper hand hygiene was critical in preventing the spread of infection.

Who discovered that germs live on hands?

Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician, is credited with discovering the importance of handwashing in preventing the spread of germs in the 19th century. He observed that the incidence of puerperal fever (childbed fever) was significantly reduced when healthcare workers washed their hands with chlorinated lime solution.

What was Dr. Semmelweis's hypothesis?

Dr. Semmelweis hypothesized that the high mortality rate among women giving birth in hospitals was due to physicians not practicing proper hand hygiene and transmitting infections from cadavers to patients. He suggested that washing hands with a solution of chlorinated lime could reduce mortality rates.

What did semmelweis observe?

he observed how doctors in the 1840s went from patient to patient without washing their hands and therefore spreading disease. he was mostly looking at women in the maternity unit and he introduced washing your hands before surgery etc. unfortunately he was put in a mental asylum for early altzymers, in there he got beaten by staff and died from his injuries. hope i could help.
