Calcitonin
The parafollicular cells (also called C cells) secrete the hormone calcitonin. Calcitonin is a weak hormone that helps in the regulation of calcium in some animals. In humans, calcitonin has only a minor role in calcium regulation.
Thyroid glands are located in the neck, in close approximation to the first part of the trachea. In humans, the thyroid gland has a "butterfly" shape, with two lateral lobes that are connected by a narrow section called the isthmus. Most animals, however, have two separate glands on either side of the trachea. TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone,which is released from the pituitarygland in the brain, stimulates the C cells in the thyroid gland to produce calcium. If too much calcium is in the blood there is possibly an oversecretion of TSH from the pituitary gland.
