The advantages of Spongy bones is it's lighter than compact bone yet still strong and they follow the lines of stress which helps with support.
1) It is lighter so the body can move with less weight to worry about.
2) It is less brittle. So the bone won't break as fast. Similar to a wooden home in an earthquake proned city versus a concrete building.

answer 2. The above is true, but not sufficient, for a hollow bone would be lighter again.
In some of our bones, we manufacture our blood cells, and no doubt the spongy nature of bone allows a greater surface for chemical reactions.
I'm sure the entrained fluids aren't there for nothing.

∙ 9y agoThe advantage of the epiphysis being formed of spongy bone is that the bone would still be strong but lightweight. With lightweight bones it would be an advantage for a runner, boater or gymnast, etc.
