The advantages of Spongy bones is it's lighter than compact bone yet still strong and they follow the lines of stress which helps with support.

1) It is lighter so the body can move with less weight to worry about.

2) It is less brittle. So the bone won't break as fast. Similar to a wooden home in an earthquake proned city versus a concrete building.

What are the two types of bone?

The two types of bone are compact bone and spongy bone. Compact bone is dense and forms the outer layer of bones, providing strength and protection. Spongy bone is less dense and found inside bones, providing structural support and flexibility.

Where does the bone get its strength from the periosteum or the spongy bone?

The strength of a bone is derived from the combination of both the periosteum, which is the outer dense connective tissue membrane covering the bone, and the spongy bone, which is a lattice-like structure found inside the bone. The periosteum provides protection and support, while the spongy bone helps to absorb impact and distribute forces across the bone.

Is the diaphysis of a long bone composed of a spongy bone?

No, the diaphysis of a long bone is primarily composed of compact bone, not spongy bone. The compact bone surrounding the central medullary cavity provides strength and support to the bone, while spongy bone is typically found at the ends of long bones.

What would happen if compact bone was on the inside and spongy bone was on the outside?

If the spongy bone was on the outside, people would look puffy or jelly like fillings. They're likely to be very sensitive to every little touch. Plus if an injury would occur the damage to spongy bone would cause less production of RBC's or permanent damage if continuously damaged. Spongy bone is lighter, softer and weaker then compact bone, but it has greater surface area and much more vascular, so it needs to be protected at al times and that's why we need compact bone to be on the outside because its stronger and stiffer then the spongy bone.

What is spongy bone made of?

Spongy bone is made of trabeculae, which are a network of bony spines and plates. It contains red bone marrow, responsible for producing blood cells, and has a higher surface area for metabolic activities compared to compact bone. Spongy bone is found at the ends of long bones and inside flat bones.

What are the locations of spongy bone and compact bone kept?

The compact bone is the outer part of the bone, and on the inside is the spongy bone. The spongy bone has small spaces which are filled with red bone marrow and some fat.

What does the inside of bone look like?

spongy

What is the spongy stuff called in a joint?

the inside part of most bones. an example in the cranium (skull), we have spongy bone in the middle and compact bone on top and bottom.

spongy pads

Layer of bone tissue having many small spaces and found just inside the layer of compact bone?

The layer of bone tissue you are referring to is spongy bone. It is made up of trabeculae, which are spiky structures that create open spaces filled with bone marrow. Spongy bone is important for providing structural support and flexibility to bones.

What differences with compact bone and spongy bone can be seen with the naked eye?

As the names suggest, compact bone is solid-looking, and forms the outer layers of all bone (and the shafts in long bones). Spongy bone looks like sponge, with small holes, and is found on the inside of bones and the expanded heads of long bones. As the names suggest, spongy bone is softer than the solid, compact bone. With the naked eye, you can see that the compact bone is smooth and located around the outside of a cross-section of bone. Spongy bone, on the other hand, is located on the inside and is very porous, like a sponge.

What does spongy bone do and where is is found?

Spongy bone is found in the epiphysis part of bone

Is the compact bone spongy?

Actually the compact bone isn't spongy at all, the compact bone is a tough layer making the bone neither too rigid or too brittle. So the compact bone is not spongy. Spongy bone, like its name is spongy.
