The Diphtheria Virus
The serum couldn't be flown directly to Nome because of harsh winter conditions that made air travel unsafe. Instead, it had to be relayed by dog sled teams in a heroic effort known as the 1925 Serum Run or "Great Race of Mercy."
If an epidemic becomes widespread, it becomes a pandemic.
An epidemic is the occurrence of disease in a community or region that is clearly in excess of normal expectancy. An outbreak is a sudden increase in occurrences of a disease in a particular time and place. In essence, an epidemic refers to a broader geographical area and higher number of cases compared to an outbreak.
There is no information or indication that Egya Ahor died due to an epidemic. Egya Ahor was a popular Ghanaian actor known for his roles in African movies, and there is no verified report of his cause of death being related to an epidemic.
An epidemic stops when the number of new cases decreases significantly over time, either due to effective public health interventions, natural immunity in the population, or a combination of both. Declaring the end of an epidemic typically involves a sustained period of decreased transmission and can vary depending on the disease and location.

Another possibility is that the name Nome was given by the city's founded, Jafet Lindeberg, originally of Norway. Near his childhood home in Norway there is an area known as Nome Valley.
