The main nutrient groups - fats, carbohydrates, and proteins - are all made of large molecules of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Protein also requires nitrogen, so without it, proteins can't be made, and as a result your body will be unable to form new tissues for growth and repair; DNA synthesis and enzyme production will also cease.

Well that depends what exactly you mean by nitrogen.

If you mean nitrogen compounds, well nitrogen is an essential part of nucleic acids and proteins needed for life. Lack of which will likely cause death.

However if you strictly mean N2, nitrogen the inert gas, then there is no adverse effects for a lack of nitrogen in our bloodstream. Air consists primarily of nitrogen which simply serves as an inert buffer. We would be unaffected if the nitrogen was replaced by another similar inert gas such as Argon.

A difference must be made since humans cannot utilize pure nitrogen gas as a substrate for our proteins and nucleic acids, we must generally use reduced forms of nitrogen such as nitrate or premade proteins containing nitrogen.

If you didn't get enough nitrogen you would have a hard time trying to sustain life. Plants, animals and humans need nitrogen (N) for their growth and development. Nitrogen is part of the proteins, nucleic acids (for example DNA) and other compounds necessary to build an organism. Nitrogen is plentiful in the atmosphere; 78% of the air we breathe is pure nitrogen gas.
