Air plants actually do not need to be "planted". They originate from very moist climates and therefore can live without soil or any other substrate. To take care of an air plant you just need to water it 3 times a week by submerging it in water for an hour or two. If you would like to mount your air plant on something like a pretty piece of bark or rock you can use a thin piece of wire or string to gently attach the plant to the wood. Again, because air plants do not really have roots that need to be in soil they can survive by just sitting in a dish with pebbles, shells etc. and do not need to be planted.
Air plants are plants from the family Tillandsia. These plants grow in wet environments and do not need soil to grow and instead take up all the nutrients they need from water in the air, hence their name "air plant". They usually look similar to bromeliads and are sold in some nurseries.
"Air plants" are plants which belong to the group of plants which are epiphytes, this means that they have roots which absorb moisture from the air and not from the soil.
