An ovary is part of the female reproductive system, and is generally located in the pelvis of female mammals. Human females normally have two ovaries. The ovaries release egg cells, called ova. From birth, the ovaries contain all the egg cells a woman will ever release, though immature.

The ovaries also produce two hormones, estrone (a type of estrogen) and progesterone. To be technical, the ovaries produce two precursors to estrone, and the conversion to estrone takes place in the bloodstream. These hormones are responsible for female secondary sexual characteristics such as breasts and soft skin.

Along with the uterus, the ovaries are also partly responsible for the menstrual cycle. Once a female has sex and a sperm cell reaches an egg cell in whichever fallopian tube it is in, she will get pregnant. Otherwise, the egg cell and the lining of the uterus dies and is discharged from the body through the vagina.

In botany, an ovary is an oval thing in a flower, and it is what later turns into fruit.
