There is really no bad or good bacteria. Some are called bad because they are doing what their genes tell them to do: cause diseases. Some are called good for the same reason except we say that they make something we view as good (cheeses)

Here are a few we have labeled bad:

  • Actinomyces =Respiratory Diseases, cavities
  • B. anthracis: anthrax and food poisoning
  • Clostridium tetani: tetanus
  • C. perfringens: food poison, gas gangrene
  • C. botulinum: botulism
  • Corynebacterium Diphtheriae
  • Gardnerella = Vaginitis
  • Listeria = Newborn meningitis
  • Mycobacterium
  • M leprae
  • M tuberculosis
  • Mycoplasma (Walking pneumonia)
  • Propionibacterium or Acne
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis
  • S aureus
  • Methicillin Resistant Staph aureus (MRSA)
  • Vancomycin Resistant Staph aureus (VRSA)
  • Streptococcus pneumonia, pyogenes
  • S mutans: Cavities
  • Borrelia Lyme Disease
  • B. Pertussis
  • Campylobacter GI infections
  • Chlamydia STD
  • Trachoma (blindness)
  • Escherichia {E. coli} Normal GI tractO157:H7 strain
  • Helicobacter Peptic Ulcer
  • Hemophilus influenza
  • URI (upper respiratory infections), Epiglottitis, Meningitis, Otitis
  • Klebsiella Hemorrhagic pneumoniae
  • Legionella pneumonia
  • Leptospiria leptospirosis
  • Neisseria N gonorrheae andN meningitides
  • Rickettsia Rocky Mtn spotted fever
  • Salmonella typhus and Food poisoning
  • Serratia Opportunistic UTI
  • Shigella Dysentery

Why can bacteria live in your digestive system without making you sick?

Bacteria in your digestive system can be beneficial by aiding in digestion, producing essential vitamins, and competing with harmful bacteria for resources. The balance of "good" and "bad" bacteria in your gut helps to maintain a healthy microbiome, which can protect against pathogens.

Bacteria that is helpful to ecosystem?

Certain bacteria play key roles in ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling, decomposition, and plant growth. For example, nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can use, while decomposer bacteria break down organic matter into nutrients for other organisms. Overall, these bacteria contribute to maintaining the balance and health of ecosystems.
