In medicine a spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle, a group of muscles, or a hollow organ, or a similarly sudden contraction of an orifice. When you epiglottis spasms, it usually closes, or partially closes your airway. When it happens the patient will present with stridor. Strodor is a high pitched wheezing sound caused by a partially blocked airway. This is rare, but people who experience it can have different triggers such as eating or drinking cold things, almost choking, etc. I have also seen people with sleep apnea wake up gasping for air because of a epiglottis spasm.
