Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar (PEA) is prepared using the following incredients:

  • Pancreatic Enzyme digest of Casein.......15.0g
  • Papaic digest of Soybean Meal.................5.0g
  • Sodium Chloride.....................................5.0g
  • Yeast Extract..........................................5.0g
  • Phenylethanol........................................2.5g
  • Vitamin K..........................................10.0mg
  • Hemin.................................................5.0mg
  • L-Cystine.............................................0.4mg
  • Sheep Blood........................................50.0ml
  • Agar.....................................................15.0g

Components are mixed in 1 L water. If making less than 1 L media, change components accordingly. Media should be prepared at pH 7.3 +/- 0.2. After mixing components and adjusting pH, autoclave at 121 degrees C for 20 min then placed into water bath at 50 degrees C to allow it to cool enough to be poured.

How might pea agar inhibit both gram negative and gram positive?

Pea agar inhibits both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria by supplying a low nutrient environment that restricts bacterial growth. The agar also contains antimicrobial properties that can inhibit the growth of a broad spectrum of bacteria. Additionally, the composition of pea agar may create unfavorable conditions for bacterial growth, contributing to its inhibitory effects on both types of bacteria.

What are the ingredients in PEA that supply carbon?

Carbon is supplied in PEA through the carbon atoms found in the chemical formula of phenylethylamine, which is C8H11N. This means that carbon is present in the molecular structure and contributes to the overall composition of the compound.

Which ingredient in PEA supplies carbon?

Casein is the ingredient in PEA that supplies carbon, as well as nitrogen. PEA is also known as Phenylethyl Alcohol Blood Agar.

Which ingredient supplies carbon in the mannitol salt agar?

mannitol is a type of sugar, so it supplies the carbon in the MSA medium

What are the differences between agar and agarose, and how do they impact their respective uses in laboratory applications?

Agar is a polysaccharide derived from seaweed, while agarose is a purified form of agar. Agar is used for bacterial and fungal cultures, while agarose is used for electrophoresis to separate DNA and proteins based on size. The differences in composition and purity impact their effectiveness in specific laboratory applications.

The composition of luria agar is NaCl,Trypotone, Yeast extract and agar.

Can PEA agar grow in E. coli?

A better way to phrase the question you are asking is "Can PEA agar grow E. coli?" The answer is yes, but only a small amount of growth will be observed because PEA is partially inhibitory to Gram negative organisms and E. coli is Gram negative.

What is the nitrogen source in PEA agar?

Pancreatic digest of casein, papaic digest of soybean meal, beef extract, peptone

What is the composition of spirit blue agar?

Spirit blue agar contains peptone, yeast extract, lactose, agar, and spirit blue dye. The dye is added to visualize the digestion of lactose by bacteria, allowing for the differentiation of lactose-fermenting and non-fermenting organisms.

What is the chemical composition of malt extract agar?

Malt extract agar typically consists of malt extract, agar as a solidifying agent, and may also contain additional nutrients like peptone or yeast extract. The exact composition can vary depending on the manufacturer or specific recipe used.

Is mannitol salt agar complex or synthetic?

Mannitol Salt Agar Complex is a synthetic medium because it is prepared from pure chemical substances and the exact composition of the medium is known.

What is the suitable media for the gram positive bacteria?

Gram negative gastrointestinal bacteria, colonies such as E.coli can usually be isolated on simple agar plates, incubated at roughly 37 degrees. Other plates can be used if you want to isolate certain aspects of the colony, but usually agar is the first choice.
