The epidermis is composed of 4-5 layers depending on the skin region (Palm of hands and sole of feet has 5 layers)
In descending order:
stratum corneum
stratum lucidum
stratum granulosum
stratum spinosum

In humans, the epidermis is four or five cell layers thick, depending upon the area of skin in question. There is the cornfield layer, the clear layer, granular layer, spinous layer and basal layer.

Cells in the lower layers of the epidermis divide continually, producing new cells that constantly push through the layers of the epidermis. By the time those cells reach the outer layer of the epidermis, they are dead and ready to slough off.
