Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles that enclose hydrolytic enzymes. They basically allow cells to break-down material (such as nutrients in regular cells, or phagocytosed pathogens in immune cells.)

Lysosomes hydrolyze worn out organelles and other cell detritus, are the main destroyers of bacteria and viruses when they are in white blood cells as they hydrolyze the bacteria and viruses to recyclable pieces.
