If it is the onion, then the cells must have absorbed a large quantity of water (or some other liquid) that caused them to swell and become circular.

If there is nothing wrong with the onion then the student doesnt know how to use a microscope.The focus could be way off and the student might have set it on too high of a magnification. Also, the light level may be set too low.
