Mendel studied pea plants. He chose strains that bred true for traits like pea color, flower color, and height. By crossing plants that bred true for these traits he was able to determine that offspring were not a "blend" of their parents and that traits were passed on by what we now know as genes in patterns that could be predicted from one generation to the next.
What he was most famous for was his genetic research with peas.
He studied pea plants
garden peas (Pisum sativum)

He undertook several breeding experiments with peas and thus he deduced the general rules of inheritance. His work was purely phenomenological, as he didn't understand how the characteristics were being passed down from generation to generation, but his works (when rediscovered) were a good start, as he was among the first biologists to use mathematical methods in his experiments.
Mendel chose peas because they had seven traits that he could study. Peas are easy to grow and they self fertilize.
go to google and type in Gregor Mendel's life timeline, and make sure to use correct grammar punctation, when you get there click on Gregor Mendel, father of genetics-Timeline index and when you click it and open up the site it will be ther waiting for you, I promise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In his study of genetics, and thus, of inheritable traits.
Mendel was the Father Of Genetics so lots of Vets and assistants in classifying use his genetics ideas to study animals.
Gregor Mendel is considered to be the Father of Genetics, and therefore of the understanding of heredity. He was able to use plants to study the way traits are passed from parents to offspring.
HeredityHe used them to study genetics (the passing down of traits).
I don't know exactly for how long did he study pea plants but I do know that his work is of immense value in the field of genetics.Gregor Mendel was the first person to introduce the concept of alleles in genes and their affect on offspring's genotype or phenotype.Modern day genetics still and will continue to use Gregor Mendel's work to understand concepts of genetics.
He used pea plants for his genetics experiment.
Gregor Mendel used pea plants to study heredity.
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) was an Austrian monk and scientist (botanist) and is considered the father of genetics.
