These are the Alveoli.
The actual air exchange in the lungs takes place in the alveoli, which are tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles. Oxygen from the inhaled air passes through the walls of the alveoli and into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
The bronchi branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which then lead to clusters of air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are the site where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs during the process of respiration.
In the lungs are small air sacs called alveoli. These alveoli are covered with blood capillaries. Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide diffuse through the alveolar capillary membrane. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli to the blood capillary and carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillary to the alveoli and you breath it out of your body.
Type 2 alveoli cells secrete surfactant, which helps to reduce surface tension in the alveoli. This allows for easier expansion of the alveoli during inhalation and prevents them from collapsing during exhalation, promoting efficient gas exchange.
I think that it protects them because they like swish them about and make them covered by a mucusy layer which then protects them further called bronchilus. this eventully stops any damage at all in the alveoli
