Intestinal obstruction (pediatric) - series?

Normal anatomyThe small intestine is basically a long tube through which digested food passes.Indications, part 1Intussusception is a common cause of bowel obstruction in children. It occurs when a segment of small bowel "telescopes" on itself, thus causing swelling, obstruction, and eventually intestinal gangrene.Indications, part 2Intussusception is suspected if the child has experienced sudden, severe abdominal pain, blood and mucous in the stool, and vomiting. Abdominal X-rays are usually taken to confirm the diagnosis. A barium enema may be used for diagnosis. Barium, a heavy, radio-opaque dye, is administered through the rectum, fills the bowel, and allows for visualization of the bowel by x-rays. This procedure is sometimes successful in correcting the problem- the weight of the barium itself in the bowel frequently reduces the telescoped bowel. If intussusception is diagnosed and not corrected by barium enema, surgery is necessary IMMEDIATELY to prevent complications such as obstruction, gangrenous bowel and peritonitis.IncisionWhile the child is deep asleep and pain-free (using general anesthesia), an incision is made in the abdomen, usually in the midline. The bowel obstruction site is located, the obstruction is relieved, and the bowel is examined for injury. Injured sections are removed and the healthy ends of the bowel are either stitched together or brought out onto the abdomen temporarily (colostomy).AftercareGenerally, patients are able to go home within 5-10 days after surgery, depending on how long it takes the intestines to recover from the surgical procedure.Reviewed ByReview Date: 05/17/2010Shabir Bhimji, MD, PhD, Specializing in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Midland, TX. What if you ate a LEGO?

It depends - if you are an adult & the Lego is small, it will probably pass through your digestive tract and be passed out with your stool. If it is a child, it could get stuck in the throat all the way through & cause an obstruction in the bowel or even a perforation (hole) in the bowel if it's sharp & large. This could possibly happen in an adult as well. In either case it's not a good idea - your body can not break down substances that are plastic - it could be dangerous.

What is the actual cause of cyclic vomiting syndrome?

The specific causes of CVS are unknown, but researchers believe the problem resides in the brain, which is home to the body’s vomiting center. With the stomach flu or a bowel obstruction, a child will vomit until his or her stomach is empty. But with CVS, the child will continue to vomit or retch long after that point. Other factors include a heightened stress response, autonomic dysfunction and mitochondrial (energy) dysfunction.

2 year old swallowed 6 pieces of gum he has been throwing up and had some watery poops no appitite Is all the gum causing this to happen He has no fever and is acting fine he just randomly throws up?

Swallowing a few pieces of gum would not cause diarrhea. Though highly unlikely it is possible it could cause a bowel obstruction which could lead to vomiting, but the vomit would smell like poop. If your child is vomiting and it smells like poop, you need to take them to the emergency room, as an obstructed bowel is a very serious condition.

What do you do if a kid swallows a lego?

Do not get them to cough it up as long as it is not caught in the throat! There is really nothing to do except wait for it to pass, I would consider going to the ER to prevent a bowel obstruction from occurringAnother opinion:NO! Do NOT try to make the child cough it up or throw it up, it could cause it to become lodged in their throat/windpipe and choke them to death! Call your doctor or emergency room immediately and let them advise you on what to do.-To prevent this from happening, ever, please buy the appropriate sized Lego for your child. For children under three, think of buying duplo or quatro LEGO. When you feel that your child is good enough, you may buy LEGO system for your child. LEGO system is the regular LEGO.
