there wouldn't be an impulse

. This can be seen in the injury of the breaking of the backbone/cutting of the spinal cord

. The grey matter of the spinal cord is composed of motor neuron

and accessory (?) neuron axons, and when these are cut, the impulses cannot be transmitted to the dendrites of the next neuron, or for that matter the effector. This results in paralysis from the site of injury down.

An axon is dependent upon its parent neuronal cell body. The axoplasm does not contain ribosomes, which means axons cannot produce proteins. Axons also have limited lysosomal capacity, meaning waste products need to be returned to the parent cell body for degradation.

This means that if an axon loses connection with the neuronal cell body, it will die.
