The stomata opens only when there is enough water in the plant to allow photosynthesize to proceed. The stomata are two cells that lie against each other, but as soon as water enters them, they begin to inflate. Due to the bean shape of the stomata the ends will still touch by the middle will be the open part to allow carbon dioxide to enter and oxygen and water vapour to leave.

In plants that use the Calvin cycle, the stomata is open during the day while the leaf is photosynthesizing to bring in Carbon Dioxide. However, the stomata will close if it is windy, there is low humidity, or it the sun light becomes too intense to prevent water loss.

C4 plants open their stomata anytime conditions are right. Since these types of plants grow in hot arid climates, C4 plants usually open their stomata at night.

What causes stomata to open?

Increase in temperature causes stomata to open. A hydathode is a type of secretary tissue in leaves, usually of Angiosperms , that secretes water through pores in the epidermis or margin of leaves, typically at the tip of a marginal tooth or serration. They probably evolved from modified stomata.

What do leaves go through at night?

At night, the leaves of C3 plants close their stomata and wait until the sunlight. For CAM plants, this is when the plants open their stomata and allow the carbon dioxide to come in.
