In case anyone gets confused (just indulge me so that I can feel smart), let me explain what the tetranucleotide hypothesis was. It was hypothesized by Phoebus Levene in 1910, a bit after he identified the components of DNA. He proposed that the four nucleotides (adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine) occurred in equal quantities - as in A=T=C=G. This idea was extended to the point where it was widely believed that these four nucleotides continued in a repetitive pattern. Because of this, DNA didn't seem like a likely candidate for genetic material. Instead, proteins (the histones in chromosomes) were believed to be the real genetic material. This belief was held steadfastly because Levene was widely respected. Sadly, many scientists second guessed themselves or were not taken seriously because of this hypothesis. Avery&McCarty&MacLeod met such criticism.
