Oak is harder than pine, but for clarification, "hardwood" just means that the wood comes from a broad-leafed tree, while "softwood" means a conifer, a tree with needles. As the names imply, most hardwoods are more dense than softwoods. However, some hardwoods are softer than pine (e.g. alderwood), and some softwoods have the density of hardwoods (e.g. yew).
