Aristotle, a greek philosopher.
The system of naming plants (and animals) was developed by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th Century. Linnaeus was a Swedeish botanist, physician and zoologist. He published his ideas in 1735, in a work called Systema Natura. His system, still used today, is called the binomial system. Each different kind of plant or animal has a name made of two parts. The first part is the name of the genus (or group) which it belongs to. The second part is the name of that particular type or species. For example, the meadow buttercup is called Ranunculus acris, the creeping buttercup is called Ranunculus repens and the bulbous biuttercup is called Ranunculus bulbosus. Ranunculusis the name of the genus to which all three species belong. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolus_Linnaeus
