Biochemically speaking:

Plants can photosynthesise, which is the process of storing the energy in sun light as carbohydrate molecules. The light's energy is used to convert simpler molecules (carbon dioxide and water) into more complex, energy rich carbohydrates.

Although some bacteria and algae can photosynthesise, most land animals will rely solely on plants to feed a food chain/web (or ecosystem). Therefore, without plants, there would be too little accessible energy to support the ecosystem.

Plants are also the source of most nitrogen for land ecosystems. The organic nitrogen compounds originally comes from bacteria, but is exchanged for carbohydrates in a symbiotic relationship between the bacteria and the plant. Without the plants, most ecosystems on land would have a distinct shortage of nitrogen with which to build macromolecules.

In marine environments, many marine organisms will also rely on plants as a food source, despite the presence of photosynthesising bacteria.

Biologically speaking:

Plants can provide shelter, camouflage and safety (high up a tree). All of these are important for survival.

What are the uses of bryophytes?

Bryophytes are land plants that lack a true vascular system. This division includes liverworts, hornworts and mosses. Human uses for these plants are few, beyond decoration. Some varieties are edible. Other bryophytes have been used for air-purification in a manner similar to vascular plants. They are prevalent in many ecosystems and an important part of the food chain.

Why are roots important to plants?

Roots are an incredibly important element to a great many plants. These plants depend on the roots to suck up water.
