i believe this is because as the tree grows upwards and outwards, the leaves that were there before die as they receive no sunlight, and are basically useless. the trees grows up and out, so produces shade over these leaves. you can see well developed trees regrowing lower leaves when they grow so tall that the very base of the tree is not covered by sahde, and shoots grow out and leaves grow too.
