mitosis takes place because without it, we will die. it is the process of splitting cells into two, one cell specializing and the other cell splitting again. as our cells die, we need to replace them with new cells, or just add new cells for growth. so if mitosis didn't occur, we wouldn't grow at all and if enough cells die, we will die.
