Cell diversity happens through different morphogens surrounding the cell. These morphogens usually leak from a single cell and effect other cells to go through sequential induction like SHH protein which if it not active creates mutations of cyclops babies. You can also have inhibitors of the inducer like in the spinal corde with SHH and BMP.

So there are generally 2 ways, first asymmetrical cell division.

So with asymmetrical cell division, You have what is called lateral inhibition through Notch Delta receptors. So basically the cells are in a silence the other cells kinda mentality through the notch receptors trying to silence the delta receptors. Whichever cell wins gets there Notch receptor cut off by a y-secretase at the S2 cleavage site. Then inside it is cleaved as well and this realeses NICD which then increases gene expression by CLS dependent mechanism.

This is how you get a mother cell. That cell is now different then any other cell

because if we didn't have diversity among organisms on earth then we would never grow as a community because we would only have one kind of organism. also if that one organism group we had on earth was prone to a deadly disease then it could be easily wiped out because if one organism caught it then it could spread and they could all die.
