Meiosis and not mitosis must be used to produce gamete. This is because meiosis produces spores that are used for reproduction and can form similar copies to the parent cell.

Meiosis produces a cell with half the number of chromosomes. The process of producing eggs and sperm, which when combining, will produce a new individual with a complete set of chromosome. This fertilized cell will divide by mitosis.

So that they only contain one copy of each gene. If reproductive cells underwent mitosis they would have two copies of each gene and gamete fusion (in humans fertilization of the egg with sperm) would result in a doubling of the copy number of genes. You would get two copies from the egg and two copies from the sperm. This would make it so that each generation would have twice as many copies of genes as the one before it. Meosis ensures that every generation has the same copy number of genes as the generation before it.

Meiosis produces cells that contain half the number of chromosomes to that of the parent cell. Reproductive cells need to have half the number of chromosomes because they will fuse together combining the chromosomes, ending up with required number. 46

Aslo there needs to be a variation in genetic make up to ensure that all new offspring are not identical to the parents, as this would be detrimental to the human race.....

Meiosis creates daughter cells which are haploid - they contain only half of the normal amount of genetic information/chromosomes.

For sexual reproduction, the sex cells of the two parents combine to create offspring. Meiosis is used so that each of these sex cells have half the normal number of chromosomes, so when they combine the offspring has the normal number.

However, mitosis creates diploid daughter cells. This means they are identical to the parent cell and have the same amount of chromosomes. If mitosis was used, the offspring would end up with twice the normal number of chromosomes.

In order for sexual reproduction to result in a new diploid individual, meiosis must occur in order to produce gametes that are haploid. In sexual reproduction, two haploid gametes (sperm and egg cells in animals) combine in the process of fertilization to form a new diploid cell called a zygote, which will grow and develop by means of mitotic cell division.

They both need 23 chromosomes, meiosis allows for this to be done, where as mitosis does not.

What cell undergo meiosis?

reproductive cells or you can also say the 23rd pair in the chromosome of the reproductive cell under goes the meiosis and the 23rd pair is called sex chromosomeGerm cells are the only cells that can undergo meiosis as well as mitosis. Germ cells produce gametes. Eukaryotic organisms that sexually reproduce have cells that undergo meiosis rather than mitosis.

Somatic cells undergo mitosis. Sex cells undergo meiosis.

Do brain cell undergo meiosis?

no they undergo mitosis

Why must gametes undergo meiosis instead of mitosis?

Gametes don't undergo Meiosis, but are CREATED in Meiosis.Gametes should be haploid. Otherwise chromosomal number will be doubled in offspring

What type of cell undergoes mitosis?

Mitosis is the form of cell division that most eukaryotic cells undergo. In humans, all somatic (non-sex) cells use mitosis to divide. Sex-cells use meiosis instead of mitosis.

mitosis yes miotis, no

Do sponges undergo meiosis?

Sponges undergo mitosis, not meiosis. Sponges are asexual, so they cannot exchange DNA between each other and must undergo mitosis to reproduce.

NoBacteria cannot under go meiosis or mitosis. Protists can undergo them

What type of cells undergo meiosis?

Cells which produce gametes (sex cells) undergo meiosis.

Are sex cells undergoing mitosis?

Your "germ" (or sex, but I prefer germ) cells undergo mitosis to create more diploids, but then they undergo Meiosis I to form a haploid. In boys, the germ cells will undergo Meiosis II to form their complete germ cells. In girls, the cell will only complete Meiosis II if the egg is fertilized. So the answer is sort of yes... the diploids will undergo Mitosis, but to actually get germ cells... they must undergo Meiosis.
