Eating unknown plants, even temptingly looking ones, could easily lead to sickness or even death. Only eat plants that you recognise as being edible. If you are not sure, look up the plant in a book on wild edible plants - don't just take a risk!

How do you identify a edible plant?

Our tastebuds are most often used for this. If it taste really well, then most likely it is edible. A bitter taste may indicate certain poisons. Taste alone is however only an indication of edible value. There are many plants we actually can eat that does not really taste of a lot. The question is, Do we get any nutritions from them. During wartime in Europe it was common to grind up BirchBark and put it into the dough when making bread. It filled the stomach, bud added little or no nutritional value. One thing is for certain. If animals stay clear of certain plants, so should you. Be carefull tasting various plants for consuming. Certain plants are highly poisionus even though they might not have a warningsign when you give them a taste.
