Peahens nest on the ground for 28 days and stay grounded for a week or two after that, until their chicks can fly up to roost safely in a tree at night. While on the ground, they are easy prey. Their muted colors (gray back, green neck, white belly) help India Blue peahens hide and blend in with a wild landscape of rocks, soil, tree stumps, and greenery.
Peacocks use their colourful display of feathers and long fan-like tail to attract the drabber female peahens for mating. The peahen incubates the eggs on the nest, so being drabber helps to avoid being noticed by predators.
