There are 16 different species of penguin living in the world today. Each species belongs to a larger grouping of closely related species known as a genus. The living penguins comprise six genera (the plural of genus). The genus Aptenodytes, which consists of the Emperor and King Penguins, differs in many respects from the other living penguins. Apart from their outstanding size, their long slender bill and colourful plumage are their most apparent characteristics. No other bird can dive for as long or as deep as Emperor and King Penguins. In contrast to all other penguins, they lay only a single egg and build no nest at all, balancing their egg and, later, the chick, on their feet. The breeding biology of these two species is quite different from each other but both are extreme. They also have behavioural characteristics not found in other penguin species.

Both species have a circumpolar distribution: the King Penguin in the sub-Antarctic, restricted to islands; the Emperor Penguin in the high Antarctic.

Moult is pre-nuptial in King Penguins, post-nuptial in Emperor Penguins. Emperor Penguins often moult away from the breeding colonies.

With their yellow feather plumes and red bills crested penguins are the most elaborately adorned of the penguins. Some species also have striking red eyes. Comprising five species, Eudyptes is more diverse than the other penguin genera. All crested penguins are offshore foragers and migratory, leaving the colonies deserted during the non-breeding season.

All species display obligate brood reduction. That is, they lay two eggs but raise only a single chick. Typically, the surviving offspring is derived from the second egg, which, unlike other birds, is also much bigger than the first egg. In those species where two eggs hatch, hatching order is reversed from laying order: the chick from the second-laid egg hatches before the chick from the first egg.

During the breeding cycle, both partners must undergo extensive periods of fasting. Males, for example, often fast for over 40 days from arrival in the colony to their departure on the first foraging trip after egg laying. Incubation of the eggs is shared between the partners. After hatching, however, only the male broods the chick for about three weeks while the female provisions the chick.

Crested penguins are the most widespread genus of penguins, found throughout the sub-Antarctic, where they breed on just about any suitable island. The breeding range extends from the northern perimeter of the Antarctic to cold-temperate islands in the north. The species seem to be stratified on a north-south axis. A concentration of species is found around New Zealand where four out of the five species breed, three of which are endemic.

All crested penguins are migratory and highly seasonal breeders. Males generally arrive at the breeding colonies several days before the females. Egg laying is highly synchronised within a colony. Adults return to the colony for a post-nuptial moult.

Eudyptula is a "monotypic" genus. It comprises only a single species, the Little Penguin. The Little Penguin is different in many ways from all other penguins. It is the smallest of all penguins and the only nocturnal species. Its more horizontal posture gives it a different silhouette compared to the upright stance of other species.

In many respects, however, Eudyptula is an Antipodean version of Spheniscus, the genus of banded penguins. Just as with Spheniscus, Eudyptula breeds in burrows and generally forages close inshore. Even more striking is the close resemblance of juvenile Spheniscus with Little Penguins.

The genus Megadyptes contains only a single species, the Yellow-eyed Penguin, which is endemic to southern New Zealand. Recent phylogenetic studies have shown Megadyptes to be the sister taxon of the crested penguins, Eudyptes. Yellow-eyed Penguins share the strong reddish bill and yellow feathers on the head with the crested penguins, but differ distinctively in many other respects. Generally they rear two chicks, they forage close inshore and do not migrate. In contrast to most other penguins, Yellow-eyed Penguins do not breed in dense colonies, but in single pairs or loose groups with nests out of sight of each other.

These are the classic black and white penguins of the Antarctic and Cartoons. All three species are gregarious, breeding in colonies that sometimes can be huge. The plumage of all three species consists only of black and white.

Pygoscelis penguins are found mostly in the higher latitudes of the sub-Antarctic and the Antarctic. Of the three, Gentoo Penguins have the most northerly distribution and occur on most of the sub-Antarctic islands. Chinstrap Penguins breed a bit further south, breeding almost exclusively around the Antarctic Peninsula. Adelie Penguins reach further south than any other penguin. They have a circumpolar distribution and breed south of the polar front. There are a few colonies on the South Shetland Islands where the distributions of all three Pygoscelisspecies overlap and they breed together. In those colonies, Gentoo Penguins are the first to arrive, followed by Adelies and, later, by Chinstraps.

The black-and-white head pattern, a black stripe running down the flanks and naked skin exposed on the head are distinctive features of this genus. The hooked beak is deep and strong. Spheniscus penguins must have evolved from a common ancestor fairly recently as indicated by the close morphological similarity amongst these species. All Spheniscus penguins are allopatric (ie having separate distributions), however, so that most birds can be safely identified by their location.

Young and immature birds lack the distinct black and white plumage of the adults. Chicks, especially, closely resemble Little Penguins. Definitive means of identification of immature birds have yet to be determined.

The most tropical of the penguin genera, found in the Galapagos Islands, South America and Africa, they constitute the northern end of penguin distribution. While Spheniscus penguins breed in much warmer climates than other penguins, their breeding areas are associated with cold, nutrient-rich currents.

Timing of the breeding season is far more flexible in Spheniscus than in other penguins, with some populations breeding throughout the year. The moult is much more variable within Spheniscus than within other penguin genera. Magellanic and African Penguins moult after the breeding season, whereas Humboldt and Galapagos Penguins moult one to four weeks before breeding.
