A galah is a member of the parrot family, found only in Australia. Galahs are pink, grey and white, and are known for their playful antics, and tendency to hang upside down from branches and wires, acting like ... galahs .... It is this unusual, crazy behaviour which has meant that the word "galah" in Australia is often used to describe someone who is acting foolishly or larking around.

Galahs have a small crest which they raise when excited. They make a loud, raucous screeching sound.
