Frightful is a peregrine falcon in Jean Craighead George's novel My Side of the Mountain. Sam Gribley, the protagonist, raises her from a chick, and she becomes his loyal companion as he learns to survive in the wilderness. Frightful is known for her speed and hunting prowess, reflecting the themes of nature and self-sufficiency in the story.
INFO ON THE BIRD:I saw a bird outside the window, it was between 4-7 inches long, 2-4 thick at the flank, and solid black. That is, except for a broad, bright yellow stripe fading as it got to the nape from the throat, only on the sides just under the cheeks. The "Birds of Pennsylvania Field Guide" by Stan Tekiela does not have it, so I can't tell. It's late January, middle of winter, so I doubt it was migrating. It was sitting at the bird feeder, I forget if it was on the feeder or on the ground shortly beneath it. Does anyone know what it was?
