some sites say 1952 ,others say 54, and that model# is a 7.5 not an 8hp

I'm sorry that I was unable to find any database for Elgin serial numbers. They were sold by Sears, and the small ones (up to about 3 HP) were made by West Bend, the larger ones were made by Scott-McCullogh.
