Yes. Part of their job. The Royal Navy also used 50 American made destroyers; the famous Clemson/Wickes class flush deck destroyers (also called "four-pipers"). These were older WWI built tin cans, but about 275 of them were built.

None of them could ever compare to the Fletchers of WWII however. 175 of those machines were built.
