The 151 foot high Statue of Liberty is made of 300 separate copper plates that are each about the thickness of a penny. The copper plate are fastened to an iron framework designed by French engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The statue was assembled in Paris, then taken completely apart and the pieces were loaded onto a ship that sailed to New York City. The statue was reassembled on a 154 foot high base built at its present location, giving it a total height of over 300 feet.
