To replace a Suzuki outboard water pump, start by removing the lower unit by unbolting it and disconnecting the shift linkage. Remove the old water pump by taking off the cover and pulling out the impeller and housing. Clean the surfaces, then install the new water pump by placing the new impeller and housing in their respective positions. Finally, reassemble the lower unit, ensuring all bolts are tightened and the shift linkage is reconnected.
Propeller is external (outboard motor on a boat) Impeller is internal (vehicle water pump).
First, remove the lower unit (there is a housing for the water pump). The drive shaft goes through the housing and turns impeller. Remove the housing, the impeller is on the shaft. Install the new impeller. When replacing the housing, turn the drive shaft clockwise to make it slide down over the impeller.
To change the water pump impeller on a 2001 Mercury 115 HP outboard, first, remove the lower unit by disconnecting the shift linkage and unbolting the lower unit from the powerhead. Once the lower unit is removed, take off the water pump cover by unscrewing the screws and carefully lift the old impeller out. Install the new impeller, ensuring it is oriented correctly, and reassemble the water pump cover and lower unit. Finally, reconnect the shift linkage and secure the lower unit back to the powerhead.
You will probably have to drop the lower end of the outboard. Its sound hard but really it is usually quite simple. The pump is nothing more than rubber impeller on a brass collet.
Change the water pump impeller, they get old and need replacing every 5 years or so depending on wear.
The water pump impeller on a 7.5 hp Mercury outboard, is located on top of the gearcase, and is driven by the driveshaft.
To change the water pump on a 15HP Johnson outboard, first ensure the engine is off and cooled down. Remove the lower unit by unscrewing the bolts holding it in place, then disconnect the shift linkage. Take off the old water pump housing and impeller, clean the area, and install the new impeller and housing, ensuring proper alignment. Finally, reassemble the lower unit and test the pump for proper water flow.
The impeller is located inside the water pump housing, on the topside of the gearcase. The gearcase will have to be removed in order to service it.
