Contact your local Natural Resources and Wildlife Department for proceedures in your area. If you have a current registration, or title on the vessel, or possibly a bill of sale, they should be able to help you out.

A Boat Number, often referred to as a registration number, is a unique identifier assigned by a state or governing body for the purpose of registering and tracking the vessel, typically displayed on the hull. In contrast, a Hull ID Number (HIN) is a 12-character alphanumeric code assigned by the manufacturer that uniquely identifies a specific boat, providing information about its manufacturer, model, and year of production. While the Boat Number is primarily for regulatory purposes, the Hull ID Number serves as a means of identification throughout the boat's lifecycle.
Any Police Officer can take the Hull ID Number (HIN) and run it through the NCIC database which only takes a couple of seconds. If there is no Hull ID I would be cautious. Hull ID is located on the rear-right side towards the bottom. That is where mine are located.
The hull ID number on a boat is locatedin the upper right hand corner of the transom. It will be stamped on an affixed plate, or scribed into the hull itself.
the number is usually at the rear of the water craft on a plackerd or melted into the bumper or hull.
The last two digits in the hull ID number are usually the year of manufacture. The ID number is usually stamped into the starboard side of the transom, near the top.
Looking at the back of the vessel, on the starboard side, upper corner of the transom, you should find the hull ID number. The number will either be scribed into the gelcoat, or stamped into a plate affixed to the transom. Generally, the last two digits in the hull ID will be the year model of the vessel.
