The link I added states that Black sailors were, in fact, allowed to serve as mess stewards on submarines. That was their official title until 1947. However, anybody who served aboard a submarine had to pass the same qualification tests. Therefore, although officially only in food service work, in practice the Black sailors might perform almost any other duties aboard as well.
During World War I, the primary instrument used to detect the sound of submarines was the hydrophone. This underwater listening device allowed ships to detect the noises made by submarines, such as engine sounds and propeller movements. Hydrophones were often deployed in arrays and played a crucial role in anti-submarine warfare, helping to locate and track enemy submarines.
What promblems do you think the sailors had during the voyage
Submarines first underwent significant changes during World War I, when advancements in technology allowed for improved designs and capabilities. The introduction of diesel engines, more effective torpedoes, and better hull materials transformed submarines from primitive vessels into formidable naval weapons. This evolution continued throughout the 20th century, particularly during World War II, when submarines became crucial for naval warfare and strategic operations.
Submarines were sometimes referred to as submersibles.
During WW2, all the major countries involved used submarines.
Compass and astrolabe. Along with larger ships and the movable sail it allowed for exploration.
During WW2 the US Navy built 126 submarines.
The submarines were either called "submarines" or "U-boats." The German submarine was called the "U-boat"
World War II submarines generally did not have freezers as we know them today. They relied on limited refrigeration systems to preserve perishable food, but these were not as effective as modern freezers. The primary method for food storage was salting, drying, or canning, which allowed submarines to manage food supplies during long missions. The technology and space constraints of submarines at the time limited their ability to maintain a frozen food supply.
German submarines were referred to as U-boats during the world wars.
The British lost 76 submarines during WWII.
Before the mast refers to a sailors so called rank or his standing on board, primarlily during the age of sail. Read " Two Years Before The Mast" by Richard Dana. Only the more senior sailors were 'allowed' aft the mast.
