Main thing, it's a big money pit. You have to maintain it, and changing the oil and filling it up with gas is not even the start of the list. Costs money for insurance, even if your car isn't worth more than $500 you will pay a lot more than what it's worth through just liability. There are really a lot to list, but the fact that a car gives you freedom to get anywhere you want, the way you want is worth all of that, depending on the car, it will get you noticed, something a lot of people want, attention.

The biggest disadvantage is the insurance, but it's needed for protection of you and other people on the road. The cost of ownership is not a disadvantage, everything in this world has an upkeep cost, cars are no different. As long as you follow a service schedule (from dealer or driverside.com) you should be ok.

In my opinion it's probably having people ask you for rides! Nothing is worse than someone asking you to be their personal driver, even worse if they don't offer to help out on gas.

If you want to multiply your disadvantages, buy something practical like a pickup or van. Everyone and their brother will try to put you on the hook to help them move. It is a good way to get free beer, though.
