I've seen where cars suck water into the intake and into the cylinders. Because water will not compress it hydro locks the engine and breaks the connecting rod (s). Remove the spark plugs, check for water in the cylinders, try putting a power bar and socket on the crank shaft and turn the engine over by hand. If it won't turn one way but does turn the other and then stops (usually with a metallic thump) something's broken inside and you will need to replace the engine. Mazda's are bad for this as the intake for the airbox sits above the rad and when the water goes in the grill it gets pulled into the intake if the motor is running.

This is a tough one as it could be a number of things related to either fuel delivery, (ie bad pump) or ignition related issues. In my case, my '98 S70 started to intermittenly stall while driving. Sometimes it would restart, other times it would not. After weeks of trying to diagnose, I had my mechanic make a 'road call' the last time it stalled & would not restart. Turned out to be the ignition module which he replaced & car is running great now
