Trident Ballistic Missile Submarine
It's a submarine-launched ballistic missile system comprised of the Trident missile, the special Trident warheads and the Ohio-class ballistic missile sub.
The U.S. Navy's Trident submarine refit/resupply base is in King's Bay, Georgia.
Ohio class submarines carry 24 Trident missiles.
The Russian missile launching submarine, Typhoon Class, is slightly bigger than the USA missile launching submarine, Trident Class.
The codes are- for conventional () non nuclear powered) Submarines- SS ( for example the U.S.S. is SS-297. Atomic subs are SSN or SSBn - BN if fitted for Ballistic missiles such as the Polaris or Trident types ( there is no Submarine Called the Polaris- it is a guided missile!) so SS- submarine, SSN- Nuclear submarine- SSBN- Nuclear submarine- Missile type.
The boat was the Royal Navy submarine HMS Trident (N52), and the reindeer doe was nicknamed Pollyanna. It was given to the Trident's Commanding Officer by a Russian Admiral as thanks for help that the British had given the Russians in 1941 in the Arctic.Pollyanna lived aboard the Trident for several weeks unitl the boat returned to Portsmouth. Having gained weight along the trip, she could no longer easily fit through the hatch, so she was trussed by a local butcher and raised through the hatch with a winch. She lived out her remaining days at a zoo, ironically dying within a few days of the Trident's decommissioning.
In terms of fire power that would be the Trident submarine. In terms of propulsion power that would be the Enterlprise, with 8 nuclear reactors.
The average time to build an Ohio-class (Trident) submarine was approximately 4 years between laying the keel and launching, with another year after launching until commissioning (5 years total). There were early problems with the new modular construction process which initially ran into cost overruns, but once those were sorted out, it became the new standard for submarine construction. The last Ohio-class boat, the USS Wyoming(SSBN-742), was launched in 1991 and commissioned in 1996.
It does not have a known name apart from 'trident'.
ICBM's are surface-surface missiles and typically have a greater range than submarine launched missiles. The first developed Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) was the Navy's UGM-27 Polaris Missile, developed by Lockheed beginning in 1957, tested in 1960, and deployed on FBM submarines beginning in 1961 on the USS George Washington (SSBN-598). The Polaris served well up through the 70's, being used by both the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy. It began to be replaced by the much more versatile UGM-73 Poseidon missile beginning in 1972. The Poseidon was itself eventually replaced by the UGM-96 Trident I missile beginning in 1979, and the UGM-133 Trident II (Trident D5) in 1990, which is still in use today. The Trident missiles have true intercontinental range; the Trident I had a range of 4600 nautical miles (5293.585 miles), and the Trident D5 has a range of 7,000nm (8055.456 miles). The top range of the Polaris was only 2000nm (2301.558 miles) by comparison.
