If it's above the surface, attached to the rigging, it's a bowsprit. If it's below the surface, it's a ram. More commonly found on rowing ships, triremes and such.
A cog is a wheel with projecting teeth. These can turn either another cog or a chain.
As the Jibs'ls are flown FORWARD, the "SQAR" you refer to must be a SPAR, known as the bowsprit.
