You should pass a red navigational buoy on your right side when traveling upstream or returning from sea, which is consistent with the "red right returning" rule. This guideline helps ensure safe navigation and prevents collisions. In contrast, when heading downstream, you would pass the buoy on your left. Always be aware of local navigational rules that may apply.
"Can" buoys are navigational aids. they are black / green and have a flat top. They represent the right side (starboard side) of the navigational waterway when heading north or east. The left side of the waterway (port side) is designated by a red buoy with a pointed top. It is referred to as a "nun buoy" as opposed to "can buoy."
Starboard (right) side
When passing a green navigational buoy, you should keep the buoy on your port (left) side. This indicates that you are following the "red right returning" rule, which means you pass the buoy to the left when navigating towards a harbor or safe water. Always ensure to maintain a safe distance and be aware of any other vessels in the area. Adhering to these practices helps ensure safe navigation.
Always kept on the starboard side
Well this depends what region you are in? There are two regions IALA "A" and IALA "B" In the US we are in the IALA "B". The answer for us is "Red right return" or pass red navigational markers on our starboard side. If you are in an IALA "A" region you would pass red buoys on your portside when returning from sea.
They pass Port To Port side
They should be passed on your starboard side.
Pass the buoy so that it is to your right (red right returning).
Starboard (right) side
A buoy with red and white vertical stripes is typically used to mark navigational channels and indicate safe passage for vessels. In many maritime regions, these buoys are known as "preferred channel buoys," signaling the preferred side to pass when navigating a channel. The color scheme can vary by country, but generally, it helps mariners identify important navigational aids.
Pass to your port side headed to sea, starboard returning (red-right-returning).
"Red to the Right, Returning". When returning to port from the sea, keep the red buoy on the right side of your vessel.
