When the first SRN.4 hovercraft came out in 1968 and 1969 they could carry 250 passengers and 30 cars. In 1972/73 Hoverlloyd had their 3 SRN.4s widened to carry 280 passengers and 36 cars (165 tons). It became the SRN.4 Mk.2 (200 tons). In 1977 their 4th SRN.4 was build as a Mk.2. Also in the year Seaspeed stretched the first of their 2 hovercraft by 55-ft. and widened it so that it could carry 424 passengers and 55 cars to become the Mk.3 (320 tons). In 1982 Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed merged to become Hoverspeed, so that in 1986 the largest hovercraft was the SRN.4 Mk.3.
