The first boats were thought to be dugouts or skin boats, which predated any written history. It was somewhere during the Stone-age period, around 40,000 years ago, in the Spanish Guadalquiver River. Some people disagree and figured it might be closer to Australia or the Mediterranean. It's kind of tough to figure out since it was so long ago.
The first skin-type boats were used in the lower Euphrates River around 1000 BC or so.
