If a Johnson outboard motor won't shift into forward, it could be due to several reasons. Common causes include a malfunctioning shift linkage, a damaged or worn-out shift cable, or issues with the gearbox itself. Additionally, low gear oil levels or contamination can prevent proper shifting. It's important to inspect these components and consult a service manual for troubleshooting steps.
does it shift into reverse and wont drive? if so its your tranny it needs to be replaced
If your 40 hp Evinrude boat motor won't go forward, first check the throttle control and ensure it's functioning correctly. Inspect the shift linkage for any disconnections or damage, as this can prevent the motor from engaging in forward gear. Additionally, verify that the propeller is free of debris and turns freely. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, consider consulting a professional mechanic for further diagnosis.

Possibly a Clogged transmission filter. Change the fluid and filter.
You need to have the system checked for codes. Any electrical problem with the trans can cause a no shift.
The same problem that plauges most older Fords. There s a shift advance lever of of the throtle that connect to the transmision. Eith it is stuck or it poped off. Put back on and push it forward on the transmission
the motor wont work properly............
A 1996 Tahoe should not have auto hubs, it should have a shift motor on the transfer case that engages it there and another vacuum operated one on the axle shaft on the passenger side. They are notorious for the shift motor on the transfer case going bad, it is a push button 4wd system and should set a code that tells you what is wrong.
