They have been banned in church related schools and programs, they put out banned book lists and encourage the townsfolk to follow, parents are encouraged to ban them from households. Since Free Speech does protect the books on a public, state and national level, the more disturbing act in this attempt to keep kids from reading them are local book burnings that are held all over the place, usually in small rural communities.

i know, it's silly. in my opinion the series is fantastic and all children should get to read them. it will help them learn and also probably stop them from turning into a bunch of chavs but the parents have complained because they think the books are 'evil' because it promotes bad things such as witchcraft and leading the children to believe these things exist

These churches generally believe that the books encourage witchcraft and satanism and also teach children how to use witchcraft.
